Cells Alive is a great resource for middle and high school life science or biology students. Covering the areas of cell biology, microbiology, immunology, and microscopy, it has interactive cell models, mitosis and meiosis animations, the cell cycle, puzzles of cells, and worksheets and quizzes for student review.

Created and maintained by a retired internal medicine assistant professor, Cells Alive helps students visualize cells, cell organelles, cell processes and the difficult concepts of mitosis and meiosis.  

The best place to start with Cells Alive is the Interactive Models. By clicking on the interactive plant, animal or bacteria cells, students will locate the organelles in the cells and compare and contrast the types of cells. The interactive mitosis and meiosis models can be viewed step-by-step or the animation will play by itself.   

Other features included in Cells Alive include "How Big," which shows the magnification of a pin or nail from normal size to a one million magnification.  In "Cell Cams," students can watch cancer cells multiplying over a 24 hour period or bacteria cells multiplying over a six hour period.

The puzzles, worksheets and quizzes are excellent for students who are learning about cells, organelles, mitosis, and meiosis.  The quizzes are online and students get feedback on their responses immediately.
